Marc Salmon is the DES approved contaminated land auditor for the remediation of the former Petrie Cartonboard Mill. The 200 ha site is currently being investigated and rehabilitated by Orora, for subsequent development by Morton Bay Council for a range of land uses. Contaminants include per- and polyfluroalkyl substances (PFAS), asbestos, metals, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), ash and coal wastes, paper wastes and fuel storage residues.
The project has involved the assessment of soil, groundwater, surfacewater, sediments, biota and landfill gas and has involved significant regulatory involvement. Due to the scale and complexities of the project audit certification will occur in stages and will include two onsite landfills and a former waste water treatment system.
A 10 ha site that had been used in WWII as an airfield was subsequently developed by Richmond Valley Council as a depot. The site was then redeveloped by council for residential land after a long community and regulatory engagement process. Wastes included PAHs from bitumen spray to the sand runway in the 1940s, as well as depot associated wastes of asbestos, fuel storage residuals, metals and pesticides.
1.3 ha former industrial land used for waste disposal and uncontrolled filling, was developed by Australand as part of the new road to service industrial sites as part of port development. The project included capping wastes beneath the new public road, and involved detailed consultation with the local government and EPA.
A 70 ha residential development of former cropping and grazing land being developed by Newland Developers/Metricon. The project has involved close consultation with Tweed Shire Council. Wastes include asbestos, metals and organics from treatment by herbicides and pesticides.
Marc acted as the NSW EPA accredited site auditor for the assessment and remediation of the radiologically contaminated former mineral sands mine and processing plant at Casuarina NSW. Stage 1 of the project included assessing the 12 ha site as suitable for commercial, sensitive land use, recreational and residential uses.
The audit included the review and endorsement of environmental site assessments, sampling, analysis and quality plans (SAQPs), remedial action plan, and remediation and validation reports, community consultation, regulatory liaison and auditor certification and reporting. Easterly Point is also conducting the stage 2 audit to enable to remainder of the site to be developed.
